Fueron miles los alumnos que regresaron ayer para rendir tributo a sus compañeros y profesores fallecidos. Justo una semana antes, Cho Seung-Hui, un estudiante coreano de 23 años, decidió cambiar el ritmo devida en esta Universidad del sur del estado de Virginia y mató a 32 personas. Las solemnes conmemoraciones comenzaron muy pronto. El primer minuto de silencio se guardó a las 7:10 de la mañana en el edificio en el que Cho cobró sus dos primeras víctimas. Algo más de dos horas después, la gran concentración se llevó a cabo en el campus central, donde los estudiantes colocaron miles de recuerdos, flores, velas y escritos en recuerdo de las víctimas. Entre los objetos, alguien puso una bandera de Perú y otra de Israel en memoria de dos de las víctimas, el estudiante peruano Daniel Pérez Cuevas y el profesor Liviu Librescu, quien, según testigos, bloqueó con su cuerpo la entrada a su clase del agresor y salvó la vida de varios de sus alumnos, aunque perdió la suya. La mañana fue brillante, soleada y cálida, lo que contribuyó a que el acto fuera aún más solemne. Los estudiantes portaron 33 banderas blancas que representaban tanto a las víctimas como al agresor. Una pequeña banda de música interpretó el himno "America the Beautiful" cerca del lugar donde se había instalado un semicírculo con 33 piedras en recuerdo de los fallecidos. Junto a la piedra del agresor, alguien colocó una carta en la que se asegura que este joven "subestimó nuestra fuerza, coraje y compasión" y en la que se asegura que "rompiste nuestros corazones pero no nuestros espíritus". Este es el resumen de un convencimiento que impera en esta Universidad, decidida a superar el gran trauma. "Tenemos que seguir adelante", aseguran desde las página del "Collegiate Times", el periódico universitario. que ha jugado un papel fundamental tanto en la ayuda a los estudiantes como en la información en los momentos posteriores de la tragedia. La consigna es clara- "Vamos Hokies¡¡", que es el nombre con el que se denominan los estudiantes de esta Universidad. Alumnos, familiares y profesores, escucharon, en medio de un gran recogimiento, las 32 campanadas. Una por cada una de las víctimas. Terminada la letanía, los estudiantes lanzaron 32 globos blancos al cielo seguidos de otros mil de colores naranja y marrón, la enseña de la Universidad. Muchos, todavía, no podían contener las lágrimas y, en declaraciones a medios locales, aseguran que aún no saben si volverán a la Universidad o darán el curso por terminado ya, dos semanas antes de lo previsto. La Universidad permitirá a todo aquel que no quiera volver a las clases repetir el semestre o quedarse con las notas que tenía hasta el momento.Para los que decidan volver, la Universidad tiene una batería de psicólogos que a ayudará a superar el trauma. Se están poniendo en marcha igualmente imaginativas terapias, como la que ha llevado a la Cruz Roja a llevar a este campus decenas de perros amaestrados para ser especialmente cariñosos, que acompañarán a los estudiantes. Se trata, en definitiva, de ofrecer calma y paz para evitar más episodios tristes como el vivido el fin de semana por la familia Soriano. Su hijo Jeff, un estudiante de Virginia Tech que había sobrevivido a la tragedia, se mató en la carretera el viernes, poco antes de llegar a su casa, en Norfolk (Virginia). Sentado en el tren de regreso a casa, no pude evitar conmoverme hasta casi llorar. La historia de este compatriota me resulta muy cercana, la historia de su familia, me es conocida por que es la historia de tantos inmigrantes, de mis amigos, mis alumnos, mis vecinos, es mi historia. Y me apena mucho. Una tragedia ha sepultado el esfuerzo de Daniel y de sus padres. Lo siento tanto por ellos. Ser inmigrante en EEUU no es fácil, como algunos podrían creen en Perú. La vida aquí no es un exilio dorado, pues aunque los estándares de calidad de vida son mejores, pero aquí todo cuesta obtener y cada día puede ser una lucha constante para muchos. La historia de Daniel y sus padres, es la historia de tantos peruanos en este país y en el mundo, tratando de encontrar un mejor futuro, que nuestra patria no nos pudo ofrecer lamentablemente. Y esto no es una queja inoportuna, sinó la realidad, aunque de lamentos no se puede vivir. Puedo ver a doña Betty Cuevas tratando de matricular a su hijo en la escuela secundaria, recién llegado de Perú. Tratando de conseguir los certificados de estudios de Lima, traduciéndolos, y vacunando a Daniel para que sea aceptado. Puedo ver a doña Betty trabajando en varios empleos, un full-time y un part-time como hacen tantos inmigrantes, para conseguir el dinero para la educación de sus hijos. Estoy seguro que los familiares en Lima celebraban cada éxito de Daniel, cada carta, llamada, cada noticia, habría sido motivos de orgullo para su padre, aún en la distancia. El sueño de Daniel se apaga, pero el fuego de su ejemplo sigue vivo en la memoria de su familia y amistades. Entre los peruanos inmigrantes, hay un sentimiento de pesar pero también de solidaridad. No solamente los Cueva-Pérez perdieron a un joven talentoso, sino también nuestra comunidad, nuestro primer país. Es tiempo para otros peruanos de continuar el sueño de alcanzar una mejor educación, que Daniel había comenzado. DANIEL THE PERUVIAN STUDENT Today I was reading the story about Daniel Pérez Cueva, published by a local newspaper. Riding the train back home, I couldn&#39;t avoid getting emotional, almost about to cry. The story of my compatriot seemed very close, his family&#39;s story sounds well known because it&#39;s the story of so many immigrants, of my friends, my students, my neighbors, it&#39;s my story. And I am very sad. A tragedy has buried the effort of Daniel and his parents. I am so sorry for them. Being an immigrant in the US is not that easy, as many in Peru might think. Life here is not like a golden exile, because even though life standards are better, but here every thing takes effort to obtain and every day can be a constant struggle for many. The story of Daniel and his parents, is the story of so many Peruvians in this country and the rest of the world, trying to find a brighter future, which sadly we couldn&#39;t find in our country. And this isn&#39;t an impertinent complain, but is reality, though we can&#39;t live out of complaints. I can see doña BettyCuevas trying to enroll his son in high school, right after his arrival from Peru. I can see her trying to get his school transcripts from Lima, translating them, getting Daniel vaccinated so he can be accepted. I can see doña Betty working in several jobs, a full-time and a part-time as many immigrants do so, in order to get the money for her children&#39;s education. I am sure that his relatives in Lima were celebrating each of Daniel&#39;s achievements, every letter and phone call, every news, they had to be a reason for his father to be proud, even if he was far away. Daniel&#39;s dream is extinguished, but the fire of his example is alive in his family and friend&#39;s memory. Among Peruvian immigrants, there is a sorrow feeling but also a solidarity response. The death of a talented young man is not only a lost for the Cueva-Pérez family, but also of our community, and our first country. Como en años anteriores, esta sociedad entregó la ceremonia de graduación y reconocimiento académico a 30 estudiantes hispanos de Virginia Tech. Estos graduados con grados de licenciatura, maestría y Ph.D.,fueron distinguidos con la medalla Gesta Hispana por parte de esta asociación. Este año, esta ceremonia de graduación adquiere un significado muy especial, ya que la misma se dedicó a los estudiantes Juan Ramon Ortíz Ortíz originario de Puerto Rico, candidato para la maestría de ingeniería civil, y al peruano Daniel Alejandro Pérez Cueva. Estos dos jóvenes hispanos a los que se les entregó su medalla en forma póstuma, fueron dos de las víctimas de la masacre en la que otros 30 estudiantes y profesores perdieron la vida. Los hechos trágicos del pasado mes, que han comovido no sólo a las comunidades de Blacksburg y Virginia sino al mundo entero, no deben ser un punto de referencia cuando se habla de Virginia Tech, una institución de un alto nivel académico y una de los mejores institutos politécnicos en el país. Esta universidad fué fundada en 1872 y cuenta con más de 60 programas de licenciatura y 140 maestrias y doctorados. También está considerada dentro de las 100 universidades en el país con mejores programas de investigación. Fundada en 1919, Sigma Delta Pi es una Sociedad Honoraria Hispana y miembro de Association of College Honor Societies. SDP honra a estudiantes que han completado tres años en el estudio del español a nivel universitario Antonio Fernández Vásquez, associate professor of Spanish y el director del Intensive Second Language Institute de Virginia Tech, y quien recientemente ha sido electado vice presidente regional de Sigma Delta Pi, mencionó que el capitulo de SDP de Virginia Tech se ha ganado la condecoración "Capitulo Honor y Mérito" los último tres años de entre más de 500 capítulos en la nación. La comunidad hispana del Valle de Roanoke se unió a la celebración de esta ceremonia de graduación, felicitando a los graduados hispanos, que al completar sus estudios superiores son ejemplo y modelos a seguir para muchos de nuestros niños y jóvenes. En un mundo como el de hoy, dinámico y voluble, es necesario recordar el papel de las universidades. Además de educar un rol importante de una universidad es el de establecer lazos comunicantes con la comunidad y ser un reflejo de la sociedad donde se encuentra. El pensador francés Michel Maffesoli cita en su libro Posmodernidad: "Toda Universidad debe aspirar a ser una ciudad, sólo así se podrá evitar la tajante separación entre el estudio y la vida diaria, entre el aula y la calle, entre el claustro y la urbe." La prensa repite constantemente que el asesino, Cho Seung-Hui, emigró de Corea a los 8 años. Antes de sus escalofriantes actos, la historia del joven es similar a la de muchas familias inmigrantes. Sus padres que emigraron buscando un futuro mejor, durante años trabajaron en una lavandería, y seguramente estaban orgullosos que sus hijos fueran a la universidad. Inicialmente, Cho Seung-Hui, fue blanco de las burlas por no saber inglés, pero eventualmente aprendió el idioma, y se podría decir que incluso absorbió los aspectos más violentos de esta sociedad, donde los tiroteos en las escuelas parecen repetirse sin sentido. Ahora sus padres viven "una horrible pesadilla" según un comunicado de la familia que agrega que nunca se imaginaron la capacidad de violencia de su hijo quien "ha puesto a llorar al mundo". Pero esta masacre también tiene otra cara inmigrante que no ha recibido tanta atención de los medios. Las víctimas, los héroes y los dolientes de esta tragedia, también tienen rostro inmigrante y desde Perú, Puerto Rico, Indonesia, India, Líbano, Polonia, Vietnam, Canadá y los Emiratos Arabes Unidos, llegaron para cumplir su sueño americano estudiando o enseñando en Virginia Tech. El profesor Liviu Librescu, nacido en Polonia, se interpuso ante las balas tratando de salvar la vida de sus estudiantes. El maestro bloqueó la puerta del salón, mientras le urgía a sus estudiantes que se tiraran al piso. El estudiante peruano, Daniel Pérez Cueva de 21 años, también murió en el tiroteo. Su madre Betty Cueva lo recuerda como un joven alegre, que sin embargo asumió grandes responsabilidades familiares tras la deportación de su padre a Perú y se pagaba sus estudios para no incomodar a su familia. Juan Ramón Ortiz de Puerto Rico, también fue víctima de la masacre. Su padre, al ser entrevistado desde Puerto Rico, dio un ejemplo de compasión al mundo, al decir entre lágrimas, que también había que orar por la familia del asesino.
