Description
An account of the resource
One of the items on display at the Alumni Center Art Exhibit. On 4/16/08, as part of the Day of Remembrance observance, the Holtzman Alumni Center Museum displayed examples of art, crafts, quilts, and other memorabilia contributed since April 16, 2007. This is one of over 60,000 items that will eventually go to Special Collections at Newman Library.
This piece of art by Farhan Abouassali was accompanied by a letter of explanation that said:
"The first analysis is the earthy tangible section represented by a building with three dimensional look stones to resemble the colors and the look of most of the Virginia Tech buildings on campus.
Second, the colors of the Hokies flowers that represent the student or the Hokies who raised their hands to the sky waving goodbye to their Hokies friends.
Third, the 32 fallen Hokies, the victims of the tragedy being grouped together with the sun in ceremonial cession, and they all making a complete circle. The 32 Hokies spirits shape half of the circle and the sun completes the other half. The ceremony is to prepare spirits of the victims to the second life or to eternity.
Fourth, the representation of a superior life, and the space that carry the spirits to heaven is manifested in the upper part of the painting.
Finally, the gradual change of Hokies colors from the bright orange to the dark maroom is meant to be so obvious and not to blend completely. I intended the shades of the colors to show and resemble the skyline of the new river valley with the shapes of the mountains all around it."
(the first 2 lines of the letter were not visible at the exhibit.)

A teddy bear from the Voices of September 11th sent to President Steger with a letter that said:
"On behalf of the staff and members of Voices of September 11th, I wish to offer my deepest and heartfelt condolences for the tragedy which the Virginia Tech community has suffered. Like September 11, 2001, your loss is one of national proportions, devastating your individual families and community, but also weighing on the hearts of those who you may never meet.
After the death of my 24-year-old son in the attacks on the World Trade Center, my family received an outpouring of support from around the world. Of the most poignant and memorable was a small teddy bear carrying a message of hope. Such a tangible symbol of caring and support helped us to stay strong in those trying days and weeks.
From one community affected by a senseless act of violence to another, I offer you these teddy bears not only as a gesture of goodwill, but as a promise of support. Our doors both literally and figuratively are open to you. I hope that as your collective journey of healing begins, the lessons we have learned workig with the 9/11 families and others traumatized by terrorism may serve...to you in the months and years to come. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely yours,
Mary Fetchet
Founding Director

"Dear Sir,
My name is Linda Woodward and I have been making dolls for a while. I heard about the tragedy that happen last week. I am so deeply sorry about it. A quilt for the Corps of Cadets sent from Colorado State University with a letter that said:
"Dear Corps of Cadets,
On behalf of the Arnold Air Society and Detachment 090 at Colorado State University, we would like to send our deepest condolences for those affected by the violence. You have been on our minds a great deal the past few weeks and our hearts go out to you.
We wanted to show our support in some way, so we created a quilt that bears the messages from students here at Colorado State University. We passed out thousands of ribbons bearing the Virginia Tech colors, and students and faculty alike signed the quilts and wore the ribbons in support. We collected donations and have sent them to the scholarship fund in the name Matt La Porte.
We know that nothing can replace the loss of a loved one, and that only through the support of one another and time will the wounds start to heal. We felt that this was the least that we could do, and we wanted to show our support in some way. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

A quilt accompanied by a letter that said:
"My name is Jackie Wake. When the shootings happened in April my heart fell to my gut. This is what I do (make afgans) and the Lord laid in on my heart to do this for VT. Please lay it out and stand back so you can read all the names. We decided to take a trip to bring it down. We hope you can find a use for it.

A drawing of the victims. Accompanying this drawing was a letter dated June 28, 2007 and addressed to President Charles Steger in which the artist, Samuel X Holloway #201510, explains that he hopes the drawing can serve as a "tool in creating inspirational projects and raising money". Holloway gave all copy rights for the artwork to Virginia Tech. He was inspired to create the piece after seeing the victims' photos in The Richmond Times newspaper.
